Your first sortie

The first sortie teaches the chain: sentries, then the column, then the officer, then the general. Start with the two men on the posts. Take them before they raise the alarm.

Pick your load

• Service ball: the standard round. Forgiving, no specialties. A good start.
• Armour-piercing: officers and generals fall in half the hits, but the window is narrow.
• Match grade: tighter groups, so the hit window forgives more.

The loop

Fire, relocate, hide, recover. The men shoot back once they have a firing solution, so do not stay in one spot after a shot. Use Shift standing still to steady your aim, but watch your stamina.

The maps

• Kollaanjoki, on the Karelian border: the river is frozen and the patrol road is quiet. Your line is the last one north of the lake. Hold it, and count your rounds.
• Tolvajärvi, whiteout country: open ice with no cover for a kilometre, and wind that erases tracks fast. Shoot once, then move.
• Suomussalmi, the motti forest: burnt farmsteads and thick fog. The enemy here is lost and desperate and shoots at everything.
• Lapland, above the Arctic Circle: open ridgelines, hard sun and long shots. The hills are open, and so are you.

Later sorties

Objectives change with the sortie number. Expect to silence watchtowers, break a supply dump apart with rifle fire, win a duel with an enemy sniper, hunt a patrol, or stay hidden while a sweep passes. In the end everything they have left moves up one road, and the general walks with them.

Getting out

A quiet sortie ends with you vanishing into the snow. A loud one brings a flare, a hunting camp and shells walking toward you. Look for the green smoke column and reach it.
